In response to the EU Digital Markets Act, Microsoft earlierAnnounceThe Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems in the European Economic Area (EU, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein) are now updated with new features, including the ability to uninstall the built-in Microsoft Store and prevent the previous prompt that required users to set Microsoft Edge as their default browser unless they manually changed it. Additionally, the update allows users in the EU to remove Bing search results from Windows search results.
Microsoft explained that the new Microsoft Edge browser usage mode will be implemented starting with Microsoft Edge 5 version launched in the European Economic Area on May 29, or provided through the operating system Beta update content of Build 137.0.3296.52, and the remaining features will be available to retail channels starting in July.
In addition, the Windows search function in the European Economic Area will avoid displaying search results through Bing by default. Instead, it will focus on searching for content based on the user's default search engine. It will also allow users to search for content through multiple search engines and readjust the order of search results from different search engines. This update has been tested through a preview version and is expected to be released in full version in early June.
As for the Microsoft Store in the EU economic zone, Microsoft said that it can be uninstalled at any time, but apps installed and downloaded through the Microsoft Store can still be updated, and this feature is expected to be available later this year.
