Following its announcement in 2022 to discontinue its gaming memory sub-brand Crucial Ballistix, Micron recently announced its complete exit from the consumer storage business, meaning that the 29-year-old, well-known DIY memory manufacturer...Crucial consumer brandsIt will officially become history.
AI-driven surge in demand for data centers leads to a shift of resources to high-profit markets.
MicronstatementThe statement clearly indicates that this decision was made to focus company resources more on high-profit corporate and commercial markets.
As the artificial intelligence (AI) wave drives a surge in demand for memory and storage space in data centers, Micron believes it must adjust its strategy to meet the needs of rapidly growing market segments and large customers. Prioritizing enterprise-side production capacity, rather than the highly competitive and relatively low-margin consumer market, clearly aligns better with Micron's current profit objectives.
The relevant products will be sold until February 2026, after which employees will undergo internal transfers.
Regarding existing products and users, Micron stated that Crucial brand products will continue to be sold until February 2026, and emphasized that it will continue to cooperate with channel partners. It also promised to continue to provide warranty and technical support for sold products to ensure that consumer rights are not affected.
In addition, Micron plans to offer internal transfer opportunities to affected Crucial brand team members, reassigning them to existing vacant positions within the company to mitigate the impact of this strategic change on employees.
Analysis: The integrated supply chain is shifting its focus, avoiding entanglement with price wars in the consumer market.
Analysts believe that Crucial's past product strategy in the consumer market has been relatively stable and conservative, and may not be the first choice for players who pursue ultimate performance or exaggerated appearance.
With memory chip costs soaring due to the demand for artificial intelligence, Micron, with its vertically integrated wafer manufacturing capabilities, would be more commercially viable to supply its precious chip production capacity to its own high-margin enterprise-level products or to sell chips directly to other storage brands than to invest in and operate consumer brands that face cost pressures and are highly price-sensitive.
In the future, Micron will continue to focus on providing enterprise-level memory and storage solutions for servers, data centers, and other applications under the Micron brand.
