Before the upcoming SIGGRAPH 2025 in Vancouver, Canada, Meta will showcase itsNew virtual vision headset, including the "Tiramisu" design that boasts support for hyperrealistic VR, and the head-mounted device "Boba 3" that boasts support for mixed and virtual vision, which will enhance the user's immersion in large-scale scenes and dynamic interactions.
Tiramisu for ultra-realistic virtual reality
Among them, the contrast ratio of "Tiramisu" is three times that of the current Quest 3, the peak brightness is increased to 14 times, and the visual resolution is 3.6 times higher. Converted into actual specifications, it can reach 1400 nits of brightness and 90 PPD (pixels per degree, resolution per viewing angle) respectively.
Tiramisu is being developed by the Optics, Photonics, and Light Systems (OPALS) team at Meta Reality Labs Research. Their goal is to create an immersive experience that passes the "visual Turing test," making virtual images virtually indistinguishable from the real world. Optical research scientist Xuan Wang stated, "Our mission is to provide the best possible image quality."
However, extreme image quality comes with technical trade-offs. The Tiramisu's field of view is only 33 degrees x 33 degrees, significantly smaller than the Quest 3's 110-degree horizontal and 96-degree vertical viewing angles. Furthermore, the prototype is quite bulky, far from comparable to commercially available consumer products.
Boba 3, a head-mounted device for mixed and virtual vision
In addition to "Tiramisu," Meta also showcased a prototype called "Boba 3," a hybrid vision and virtual reality headset designed with an ultrawide field of view, aiming to enhance user immersion in large-scale scenes and dynamic interactions.
Although Meta has not released the complete specifications, judging from the official images, the design of "Boba 3" is closer to the size and wearing method of existing MR/VR products.
In addition to "Boba 3", Meta also proposed the designs of "Boba 2" and "Boba 1". From the appearance comparison, "Boba 3" is obviously more streamlined than the previously launched designs.
Meta said that these prototypes are not products that will be launched soon, but are intended to verify the feasibility and design direction of future VR technology. They are expected to be released at the upcoming SIGGRAPH 2025 event.Exhibit these designs, thereby attracting more people to experience it and collecting relevant feedback.
