In response to recent public attention on Meta's operations in Taiwan, and to refute false accusations and dispel rumors, Meta reiterates its commitment to freedom of speech as a core value.
Based on the records to date, Meta hereby declares the following three points:
• Meta has never accepted Chinese government censorship of content for Taiwanese users
• Meta has never shared any Taiwanese user information with the Chinese government, nor has it provided any user information in response to China's request
• Meta’s content review/censorship team has never been based in China
The recent false accusations against Meta are contrary to the facts. Meta solemnly clarifies these allegations and reiterates its commitment to protecting user data, providing a safe and free platform for self-expression, and connecting communities.
Meta stated that it has long been committed to connecting the world, including past interest in operating its family of apps in China. However, CEO Mark Zuckerberg publicly stated years ago that no consensus had been reached with China, and therefore Meta has never operated in China.
Meta adheres strictly to the U.S. Stored Communications Act, including its strict regulations governing user data protection policies on its platforms. Meta protects the data of Taiwanese users in accordance with the law. Meta has never shared any Taiwanese user data with the Chinese government, nor has it provided any user data in response to a Chinese request.
Meta's mission is to make Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads spaces where people feel safe and comfortable expressing their opinions, while also working to prevent abuse of Meta services. To this end, Meta has listened to diverse perspectives and ideas, developing its Community Guidelines, which clearly outline what is and is not permitted on the platform.
This "Community Code of Conduct" applies equally to communities in Taiwan and around the world. Meta emphasizes that it has never accepted the Chinese government's censorship of content for Taiwanese users.
With billions of pieces of content posted daily on the platform, Meta utilizes its technology-based detection and content review teams to identify potentially violating content and accounts and take appropriate action. Meta's content review and audit team includes full-time employees whose primary responsibility is content review, as well as content reviewers hired by partners. These individuals must possess language proficiency and local cultural expertise.
To maintain online security for the Taiwanese community, Meta employs native Taiwanese speakers of Mandarin and Traditional Chinese to review content originating from Taiwan. This content review/censorship team, fully understanding Taiwanese cultural context, local context, and the meaning of text, is located across the globe, spanning time zones, and works 24/XNUMX to maintain community security.
Meta refuted the rumors and solemnly clarified that Meta's content review/censorship team has never been located in Shanghai or other parts of China. It also reiterated that it will continue to defend freedom of speech in Taiwan, protect Taiwanese user data in accordance with the law, and continue to fulfill Meta's important commitment to creating a safe and free platform for everyone to express themselves and connect with each other.
