Recently announced that it will open source its virtual vision head-mounted device operating system and name the operating systemChanging to Meta Horizon OSLater, Meta emphasized in a subsequent statement that it would continue to develop the Quest series of virtual vision headsets, and further stated that it currently only authorized cooperation with industry players including ASUS, Lenovo, and Microsoft to create virtual vision headset products using their operating systems.
Meta's description indicates that even though the Meta Horizon OS operating system is open source, creating a virtual reality headset with it still requires a partnership with Meta. This approach is similar to how Google open-sources its Android operating system, but still requires a partnership with Google to access its full technical resources if it wants to build a device with Google services.
Meta chose to open source the Meta Horizon OS operating system, mainly hoping to attract more industry players to join the market and promote the development of virtual vision technology applications through the collective power of the crowd.
Meta has already partnered with ASUS, Lenovo, and Microsoft to create a virtual vision headset. ASUS is expected to produce it under the ROG brand, so it may target gaming applications, while Lenovo is targeting productivity, learning, and entertainment applications. The collaboration with Microsoft is partly inspired by Xbox, which may allow the Xbox Cloud Gaming cloud gaming service to be used in conjunction with a virtual vision headset.
In addition, Meta also called on Google to bring its Google Play Store software market to the Meta Horizon OS environment to expand the scale of its service ecosystem.
