The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Meta may be planning to sell its virtual reality headset in the Chinese market through a partnership with Tencent, and now there are reports that the deviceIt will be launched in the Chinese market in the second half of 2024, and will adopt higher-level computing performance than Quest 3, and will cooperate exclusively with Tencent.
Earlier, when Meta was still operating under the name Facebook, it had partnered with Xiaomi to launch a virtual reality headset for the Chinese market. This device was also sold in international markets including the United States as the first-generation Quest.
Meta clearly still hopes to expand its VR headset application opportunities in the Chinese market, hence its partnership with Tencent, hoping to leverage Tencent's gaming market size and content to attract a wider user base. Profits from VR headset sales will accrue to Meta, while Tencent will profit from game sales, service subscriptions, and paid subscriptions.
Furthermore, this virtual reality headset will apparently be customized for the Chinese market, featuring a design with higher computing power than the Quest 3, but with a slightly lower display quality. Beyond the Chinese market, reports indicate that this virtual reality headset, developed in partnership with Tencent, will eventually be launched internationally.
