As generative artificial intelligence becomes mainstream in content creation, Meta has announced the launch ofA new short video app called Vibes, featuring AI-generated content across all platforms, and launched first in North America, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and select European markets. This signifies Meta's continued growth in social platforms while also aiming to open up a new arena for AI technology through Vibes.
Unlike existing short video platforms, which rely on a hybrid of human and AI creation, Meta positions Vibes as a pure AI video creation ecosystem. Users simply enter a text description, and the AI generates a video that can be shared directly on the platform for others to view and use.
What’s more interesting is that Vibes has also designed a “Mix” function that allows users to remix and process existing AI videos, add personal creativity, and generate new content with different styles.
Meta emphasized that rather than allowing existing platforms like Facebook and Instagram to be flooded with AI-generated content, it's better to create a dedicated platform for AI creation. Vibes is therefore an experimental project, not only testing user acceptance of AI-generated video but also serving as an extension of future social interaction. For young people who prefer rapidly produced content, Vibes may become the next wave of digital trends.
Meta's AI technology currently encompasses voice chat, image generation, and even integration with its own smart glasses, providing an interactive AI assistant. The launch of Vibes further demonstrates Meta's intention to elevate AI from a supporting role to a leading role, allowing users' entertainment and creative experiences to revolve entirely around artificial intelligence.
However, this also brings up another issue worthy of attention: when all the content on the platform is generated by A, how should the boundaries between authenticity, creativity and copyright be divided?
Meta clearly hopes to differentiate these potentially controversial AI content from mainstream social platforms through the independent positioning of Vibes, thereby reducing the impact on major services such as Facebook and Instagram.
From a broader perspective, Vibes seems to herald the advent of an era of "pure AI entertainment." If the platform can rapidly accumulate content and attract a large number of young users, Vibes could become a new breakthrough for Meta in the short video space. However, if users prefer a more human touch and authentic interaction, Vibes may be little more than a short-lived experiment.
Regardless of the outcome, the launch of Vibes once again confirms Meta's positive attitude towards the development of AI. It also means that the future of social platforms will no longer be just interactions between people, but will gradually shift to dialogues between people and AI, and even between AI and AI.
