Faced with the rapid development of generative AI applications, Meta CEO Mark ZuckerbergAnnounceHundreds of billions of dollars will be invested to expand data centers with multi-gigawatt computing power to promote so-called "superintelligence" research and applications. However, this comes with significant capital expenditures and energy consumption, as well as increasingly controversial water resource depletion and community conflicts.

Meta's expansion of a massive AI data center, part of its push toward "superintelligence," sparked controversy over its water consumption, which could exceed millions of gallons per day.

Bloomberg NewsMetaUltra-large data centers are being built in many locations across the United StatesThe first data center, named "Prometheus," is expected to open in Ohio next year. The second, "Hyperion," will be nearly the size of Manhattan Island and will expand to 5GW (5000MW) over the next few years. Compared to most existing traditional data centers, which are limited to a few hundred megawatts, Meta will build ultra-large AI data centers to promote the development of "superintelligence" applications.

Meta said that these facilities will be used to support the development of AGI (artificial general intelligence), creating AI systems with cross-domain, human-level intelligence. To this end, Meta has continued to expand its Super Intelligence Lab team, including recruiting talent from rivals such as OpenAI and Google DeepMind, and recently joined byWang Tao, co-founder of Scale AI (Alexandr Wang) led the team.

However, resource pressures brought about by large data centers are gradually emerging. The New York Times reportedMeta's existing facilities have already had a serious impact on the area east of Atlanta, Georgia, USA, not only causing the water level in groundwater wells to drop, but also pushing up local tap water costs, which are estimated to rise by 33% in the next two years, and water supply restrictions may occur in 2030.

According to data reviewed by local water authorities, Meta's proposed new center requires up to 600 million gallons of water per day, exceeding the total daily water consumption of some counties. Mike Hopkins, water director for Newton County, Georgia, said, "The data center is draining the entire community. We simply don't have enough water."

This phenomenon isn't isolated. States like Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, and Colorado are experiencing water shortages due to the dense deployment of data centers. For example, parts of Phoenix, Arizona, have even been forced to halt new residential construction due to drought and resource conflicts.

While data centers provide the infrastructure for AI computing and drive technological innovation and economic growth, the underlying issues of energy, water resources, and community sustainability present significant challenges for tech companies. If Meta fails to properly manage resource sharing and communication with local communities, it risks further controversy and regulatory scrutiny alongside its AI development.
