Meta announced that it will invest more than $15 billion to build a new wind farm in El Paso, Texas.Large data centers with a capacity of 1GW, to advance its artificial intelligence development layout. Expected to be operational in 2028, this facility will provide Meta's AI projects with the powerful computing power required for high-end computing chips.
Massive expansion of infrastructure
The Texas data center is one of a series of major investments by Meta in AI infrastructure as the company continues to expand its computing resources in a fierce competition with rivals such as OpenAI and Google parent Alphabet.
In addition to the Texas project, Meta also launched in Louisiana earlier this year.New data center project codenamed "Hyperion"According to US President Trump at the time, the investment in the project could be as high as $500 billion, and Meta has raised $290 billion in funds from Pacific Investment Management Company (PIMCO) and Blue Owl Capital.
Meanwhile, Meta is also building anotherA GW-scale data center called "Prometheus", showing that the company is comprehensively expanding its AI infrastructure layout.
AI becomes the core development direction
Artificial intelligence technology has become a core strategic direction for Meta. It not only drives the company's chatbot service, but also supports the algorithms on Instagram and Facebook that are responsible for recommending videos and advertising content to users.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckberg has repeatedly emphasized that personal AI assistants will become "one of the most important and valuable services ever created," and has justified the company's aggressive investment strategy. In a media interview, Zuckberg acknowledged that many companies may be overbuilding, but he also believes that all those investing are making rational decisions, as falling behind could mean missing out on the most significant technological wave in the next 10 to 15 years.
Capital expenditure hits record high
Meta's capital expenditures for this year are estimated to reach $720 billion, including several AI infrastructure projects. This massive investment reflects the company's unwavering commitment to maintaining its leadership in AI and highlights the intensity of the AI arms race among tech giants.
As companies continue to increase their investment in AI infrastructure, the competition for future technological dominance is becoming increasingly fierce, and data center construction has become a key cornerstone supporting the development of AI.
