As various Internet service platforms have gradually introduced Passkey technology, Meta has finally followed suit.AnnounceIt provides a safer and more convenient login method for Facebook and Messenger apps (while also saving more people the trouble of memorizing account passwords), and will initially be available on iOS and Android devices.
Passkey is a password-free authentication standard promoted by the FIDO Alliance. It allows users to quickly and securely verify their identity using pre-configured biometrics (such as facial recognition and fingerprint scanning) or a PIN. Compared to traditional username and password login, Passkey is not only more convenient but also less susceptible to risks such as phishing, data breaches, and data reuse.
Traditional passwords will gradually become a thing of the past
Meta said that this feature will be available first on the iOS and Android versions of the Facebook app, and Messenger is expected to add support in the coming months. This set of Passkeys can be used for both Facebook and Messenger, meaning users only need to set it up once to log in across applications.
For users already accustomed to using Face ID, Touch ID, or Android biometrics for daily login, Passkey offers virtually no learning curve. Login requires only a single device verification, eliminating the need to enter multiple usernames and passwords, and eliminating the worry of password theft, forgotten passwords, or hacking.
Why was it launched so late?
While Google has been promoting Passkey login for several years, and online services like Microsoft, Amazon, PayPal, and eBay have also long supported it, and even Meta's own WhatsApp has implemented the technology, Facebook has been slow to follow suit. Therefore, the addition of Passkey support to Facebook and Messenger represents Meta's growing acceptance of password-free login.
However, Instagram has not yet added support for Passkey, and Meta has not yet stated whether Instagram will follow suit.
A safer and more user-friendly login experience
Notably, Passkey uses asymmetric encryption to store authentication information. Even if the platform's data is compromised, the account login password cannot be recovered, effectively reducing the risk of account theft. Compared to traditional four-digit PINs or single passwords, fingerprint or facial recognition provides a higher level of security.
With the advancement of AI, mixed reality, and cross-platform account integration, Meta clearly needs to strengthen its account security foundation. The introduction of Passkey Login for Facebook and Messenger not only aligns with industry trends but also enhances the overall user login experience.
