At the end of November last year, it was confirmed that the plan would spend $11 billion to build aNews about submarine fiber optic cables spanning the globeMeta explained this earlier. The "Waterworth" submarine cable construction projectThe details will connect the five continents of the world and be more than 5 kilometers long.
Meta has invested in submarine cable construction in the past, but primarily in partnership with other companies. This time, however, the submarine cable will be entirely built and operated by Meta for the first time, and will serve as the network transmission bandwidth required to support the operation of Meta's services.
The submarine cable construction project, named "Waterworth," is expected to connect the United States, Brazil, India, South Africa and other regions, thereby connecting Meta's network connectivity needs across five continents around the world.
At the same time, Meta also claims that this submarine cable will become the world's longest 24-pair fiber optic cable, and will use innovative wiring methods to lay the submarine cable to a deeper seabed location, with an expected maximum depth of 7000 meters, to avoid cable damage or breakage caused by ships anchoring or dragging anchors.
Meta did not disclose the specific purpose of "Waterworth", only stating that the submarine cable built under this project will enhance digital communications, video experience and online transactions, and is also expected to be used for the development of artificial intelligence technology.
