MediaTek has announced the Kompanio 540 processor, designed specifically for the education market. This chip will deliver exceptional performance and breakthrough battery life to the next generation of Chromebooks and is expected to be available in Chromebooks from various brands starting in January 2026.
Designed specifically for digital learning, the performance is enhanced with a 35% battery life improvement.
The Kompanio 540 features an octa-core architecture, including two high-performance Arm Cortex-A78 cores, a dual-core graphics processor, and support for LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 flash storage. This configuration allows students to seamlessly switch between tasks like web browsing, video streaming, and gaming, maintaining smooth operation even with demanding programs like STEM applications, Tinkercad 3D design, and Minecraft: Education Edition.
In addition, the most significant upgrade of Kompanio 540 is power efficiency. The battery life is improved by 35% compared with the previous generation. It supports fanless design, operates quietly and coolly, and is lighter and more portable, so it can be used anytime, anywhere.
Enhanced multimedia experience
Kompanio 540 has a built-in high-performance video decoder that provides smooth and energy-efficient high-resolution streaming, and supports external TV playback without draining the battery.
Meet classroom projection and multimedia learning needs
"The Kompanio 540 brings the perfect balance of performance and energy efficiency to even more Chromebooks, allowing users to easily handle a full day of work and play," said John Maletis, Vice President of ChromeOS at Google.
As digital learning becomes the new normal, MediaTek is targeting the rapidly growing education technology market, providing students with digital tools that truly keep pace with their learning by optimizing performance and battery life. The launch of this processor also demonstrates MediaTek's continued expansion in the mobile computing sector.
