MediaTek announced its next-generation, high-performance edge AI IoT platforms, the Genio 2025 and Genio 720, at Embedded World 520 in Nuremberg, Germany. Designed for IoT devices such as smart homes, smart retail, industrial, and commercial applications, these two Genio series products support the latest generative AI models, human-machine interfaces (HMIs), multimedia, and communication capabilities.
“The Genio 720 and Genio 520 platforms bring powerful, energy-efficient generative AI computing to a wide range of IoT devices, ushering in a new era of IoT innovation and providing users with a seamless and data-secure experience,” said Zhenguo Wang, general manager of MediaTek’s IoT business unit. “In addition, by integrating the NVIDIA TAO toolkit and other widely used AI models into edge AI applications, developers can expand their designs to a wide range of product applications, from smart retail displays to sophisticated industrial human-machine interfaces.”
The Genio 720 and Genio 520 offer edge computing performance. Their built-in MediaTek eighth-generation NPU delivers a computing power of up to 10 TOPS, providing full hardware acceleration for Transformer and convolutional neural network (CNN) models.
In addition, the Genio 720 and Genio 520 further enhance memory performance, supporting up to 16GB of LPPDR5 memory. This accelerates the execution of large, data-intensive language models at the edge, such as Llama, Gemini, Phi, and DeepSeek. Leveraging MediaTek's global ecosystem, developers can leverage industry-leading global language models and common frameworks to rapidly develop multimodal generative AI applications and accelerate time to market.
Both the Genio 720 and Genio 520 are manufactured using a 6nm process and integrate an octa-core CPU, including two Arm Cortex-A8 CPU cores and six Arm Cortex-A2 CPU cores, to optimize their performance and energy efficiency. Their low power consumption features meet the design requirements of fanless and battery-powered mobile devices.
The Genio 720 and Genio 520 are also suitable for commercial displays, smart retail devices, human-machine interface applications, and other devices requiring multiple windows or multiple interactions. Furthermore, the single-platform hardware and software design allows developers to easily apply single development results to multiple terminal applications and easily customize the design to meet specific application requirements.
Additional features of the Genio 720 and Genio 520 Smart IoT platforms include:
• Supports 4K/5K ultra-wide monitors, or two 2.5K monitors
• Power-efficient 4K H.264/H.265 video encoding and decoding capabilities
• Support dual ISP, 16MP 30fps, 16/32MP 30fps
• Supports six FHD 30fps cameras via MIPI virtual channels
• Pre-integrated with MediaTek Wi-Fi 6/6E solutions
• Supports Wi-Fi 7 and 5G Redcap upgrades via external modules
• Support Android, Yocto Linux, Ubuntu operating systems
• Provides flexible high-speed I/O interface combinations for system expansion
• Provides multiple display interfaces, especially suitable for multi-screen display applications
• Supports both commercial and industrial wide temperature ranges
Both AI IoT platforms support Open Standard Modules (OSMs) and come with reference designs that provide power and signal integrity, significantly shortening the development cycle of OSMs.
Open standard module designs based on Genio 720 and Genio 520 are expected to be launched by MediaTek partners in the second half of this year, accelerating the time to market for end products.
