Ahead of the official launch of Apple's iPhone 11 series, Huawei officially unveiled its second-half flagship Mate 30 series in Munich, Germany. The company also released a 30G version based on the Mate 5 Pro, touting its fastest 5G connection yet. However, as previously rumored, Huawei did not use the GMS (Google Mobile Service)-certified Android operating system on the Mate 30 series. Instead, it offered its own app download and installation platform, "AppGallery," allowing users to access apps through Huawei's mobile services.
Due to the impact of Sino-US trade, after the US government included Huawei in the list of banned products, HuaweiWithin the approval periodNecessary system updates can still be provided by Google, but subsequent products will not be able to obtain GMS certification from Google. Therefore, although the open source Android operating system can still be used, Google Play services cannot be used smoothly, and even the use of Google services cannot guarantee compatibility and stability.
Huawei has previously stated that it will not be launching any new products too soon.Hongmeng operating systemThe Mate series, which is applied to its products, still uses the Android 10 operating system and has been replaced with the EMUI 10 operating interface. It is expected that the version launched in the Chinese market will not have too many usage problems. However, if the international version sold overseas cannot successfully access services such as Google Play, it will obviously cause considerable trouble to users.
Therefore, Huawei is offering its own Huawei Mobile Services for the newly launched Mate 30 series, and emphasizes that its previously launched models have accumulated over 5.7 million monthly active users worldwide. Among them, the AppGallery service, which provides app content downloads, has accumulated 3.9 million monthly active users worldwide, with approximately 1800 billion app downloads annually. The service is used in more than 170 countries and regions around the world. This emphasizes that even without Google Mobile Services certification, Huawei can still provide necessary content through its own services.
However, even if Huawei's own services can provide the necessary application content, users in markets outside of China have long been accustomed to using Google services and the content provided by the Google Play platform. Switching to Huawei services in a short period of time will obviously face many adaptation issues.
Given Huawei's current global mobile phone market share, the company has the potential to establish its own ecosystem through widespread product adoption. Therefore, at its recent Developer Conference, Huawei not only announced the opening of its mobile services framework and the provision of numerous APIs, but also pledged a $10 billion investment to expand its mobile services ecosystem. The company hopes to attract more developers to expand its mobile services ecosystem, thereby emulating the Google Play platform model and attracting more users through rich app content.
Before Huawei, other companies, including Samsung, had also tried to build their own operating system market ecosystems by leveraging the scale of their product sales, but ultimately they were still unable to avoid maintaining a deep connection with Google services because it was difficult for users to break away from their original operating mode of using Google services.
If Huawei's mobile phone products are unable to use Google services smoothly due to the impact of Sino-US trade, Huawei will have to find a way out by promoting its own service development model, otherwise it will be difficult to maintain its current sales position in the international market.
