As competition in generative AI assistants intensifies, user stickiness to a particular AI often hinges on "how well it understands you." To break down this switching barrier, Google announced a new "migration tool" for its AI assistant, Gemini.
This new feature, available to all consumer accounts, allows users to easily import personal preferences, memories, and complete conversation history from other AI applications (such as ChatGPT or Claude) directly into Gemini. This means that when switching AI platforms, users no longer need to "train" the assistant from scratch, but can seamlessly integrate previous conversational contexts and personalized settings.
"Memory Import": Use a prompt word to help Gemini quickly recognize you.
We all know that a good AI assistant must understand the user's background and preferences. To alleviate the growing pains of switching platforms, Google introduced the easy-to-use "Memory Import" feature.
• Painless transfer settings:Users simply need to access Gemini's settings page and select the import option, and the system will provide a specific "suggestion." Users can then copy this suggestion and paste it into their existing AI application, allowing the application to generate a summary that includes the user's preferences, interpersonal relationships (such as family members' names), and background information.
• Real-time analysis and storage:Next, simply paste this summary back to Gemini, and the system will instantly analyze the information and securely store it in the user's Gemini context, ensuring that Gemini has full access to this crucial information for the next conversation.
Supports importing complete ZIP files: Packs all chat history.
Beyond basic character settings and preferences, many users are truly interested in the context of their discussions with AI over the past few months or even years. To address this, Google has further opened up the "full conversation import" feature.
• Upload ZIP compressed file:Users can directly export conversation history from other AI providers and upload it to Gemini as a ZIP archive. After uploading, they can not only search for past conversations but also continue the conversation directly within Gemini.
• Combining personal intelligence:This feature is deeply integrated with Gemini's ecosystem. Once the user authorizes it, Gemini can not only read these imported conversations, but also provide assistance by combining Gmail, Google Photos, and search history. For example, if the user has previously discussed hotels in Barcelona with other AIs, Gemini can directly continue the conversation and help plan the itinerary by combining Google Maps and Gmail.
• Interface renaming:To reflect the evolution of this feature, Google also announced that in the coming weeks, the "Past chats" section in the app will be officially renamed "Memory".
