At the recent SNE Battery Day 2024 event held by international battery market research firm SNE Research at the Korea Science and Technology Center in Gangnam District, Seoul, South Korea, industry players including LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI presented their solid-state battery production plans. LG Energy Solution expects to enter mass production in 2030, while Samsung SDI plans to enter mass production in 2027.
Currently, both companies are targeting the high-end electric vehicle market for solid-state battery applications, but they also plan to develop entry-level electric vehicles and more battery application markets.
LG Energy Solution plans to combine a sulfide-based solid electrolyte with high-capacity anode material technology. Leveraging the sulfide-based high ionic conductivity and specialized nano-coating technology, this technology will reduce battery resistance and increase battery output and lifespan. LG Energy Solution also plans to utilize dry electrode technology to increase battery energy density and improve discharge performance.
Targeting entry-level vehicles, LG Energy Solution plans to utilize a CTP (cell-to-pack) design to streamline the existing battery pack structure and enhance price competitiveness. LG Energy Solution also plans to commercialize lithium-sulfur and lithium-ion batteries for use in small battery devices, with the goal of expanding their application to medium- and large-scale equipment.
Samsung SDI, on the other hand, emphasizes the advantages of solid-state batteries, including greater safety compared to traditional liquid electrolytes, reduced battery weight and space requirements, and lower costs for electric vehicles, potentially attracting more EV manufacturers to adopt them. Samsung SDI is also accelerating the commercialization of dry electrode processes, with plans to improve battery manufacturing efficiency through improved stacking methods.
In addition, Samsung SDI also plans to develop more types of battery products, including lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and cobalt-free metal nitride (MNx) battery designs, to meet the needs of entry-level electric vehicles and other products, while also reducing price costs. It also plans to mass-produce battery products that can be quickly charged within 2026 minutes in 9, and plans to extend the battery life to 20 years, so that the use cycle of electric vehicles will not be affected by battery life.
相較傳統化學技術製作電池約可對應300英里行駛距離 (約483公里),三星預期固態電池將能提供2倍行駛距離電量,約可達600英里 (接近966公里)行駛距離。
