LEGO CEO Niels Christiansendisplay, will abandon the use of new materials in Lego brick design because it will produce higher carbon emissions.
Compared to the petroleum-based ABS plastic (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) used in the past, Niels Christiansen said that Lego bricks made from RPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate) will actually produce higher carbon emissions. Obviously, it is not easy to find a suitable material to replace ABS plastic.
Prior to this, Lego had stated that it would replace petroleum-based ABS plastic with sustainable materials before 2030, but the reality is that it is currently difficult to find environmentally friendly materials that have the same color, gloss, and durability as ABS plastic.
Among them, RPET material is softer than ABS plastic, so additional ingredients need to be added to make it more durable and meet the safety characteristics. It also requires additional processes to complete processing and drying. In order to make more environmentally friendly Lego bricks, Lego actually causes greater environmental impact.
However, LEGO has clearly not given up on incorporating sustainable design concepts into its products. It will make its Miracle products more environmentally friendly by adding more bio-based and recyclable materials.
