According to The New York TimesReportAmazon founder Jeff Bezos will officially assume the role of co-CEO of Project Prometheus, an AI startup he partially funded. This will be his first official position since stepping down as Amazon CEO in 2021.
Raises $62 billion in early-stage funding to target AI for improving manufacturing
While Project Prometheus remains shrouded in mystery, reports indicate that it is one of the world's most well-funded early-stage startups, having already raised a massive $62 billion in investment, part of which came from Jeff Bezos himself.
The company’s core objective is to use AI technology to improve manufacturing, especially in high-precision fields such as computers, automobiles, and aerospace.
The team boasts an impressive lineup: former Google X executives and former employees of OpenAI/DeepMind.
Another co-founder and co-CEO of Project Prometheus is Vik Bajaj, a physicist and chemist who previously worked at Google X and led the health technology company Verily.
The report states that Project Prometheus currently has nearly 100 employees, including former employees from AI companies such as OpenAI, DeepMind, and Meta.
Jeff Bezos' first position after stepping down as Amazon CEO
Jeff Bezos's personal appointment as co-CEO demonstrates his high regard for this project. Since stepping down as Amazon CEO in 2021, Bezos has focused primarily on his aerospace company, Blue Origin, a competitor of SpaceX, which just last week successfully completed the first landing of the New Glenn booster.
Jeff Bezos's return to an operational role and his decision to invest in AI manufacturing clearly demonstrate his recognition of the enormous potential of AI in physical industrial applications.
