PressIt is said that Amazon may plan to build a new operating system code-named "Vega" based on Linux to replace the Fire OS originally built on Android, and plans to use it for Fire TV boxes, TV sticks, or devices such as tablets.
Reports indicate that Amazon first had this idea in 2017 and proposed this requirement to chip manufacturers, hoping to achieve greater stability in hardware and software integration. Furthermore, hundreds of people are currently working on this operating system, including former Mozilla engineer Zibi Braniecki, who joined Amazon in 2022.
In addition, the new operating system, codenamed "Vega," will be based on React.js and operate on the open source App architecture proposed by Meta. It can be used in both iOS and Android environments, meaning that developers will be able to quickly create App services for different platforms.
Amazon seems to have completed most of the development work on "Vega", but the specific launch schedule has not yet been confirmed. However, it is expected that Amazon will be able to get rid of the problem of relying on the outdated core version of the Android open source project in the past. For example, the operating system currently used for the Fire TV TV box is still based on Android 9 design, and many apps on the Google Play Store have even been updated with the launch of the new version of Android 14.
In addition to being used in existing connected devices, Amazon apparently also plans to use "Vega" in smart car systems or other new products that have not yet been launched, thereby reducing its reliance on Android open source projects.
