Industry sources revealed that Apple has officially approved Chinese panel manufacturer BOE to become the display panel supplier for the iPhone 17 Pro. It is expected to provide OLED display panels for the production and sales version for the Chinese market, but the global market sales version will still be supplied in cooperation with Samsung and LG.
BOE previously supplied display panels for Apple's standard iPhones, but never made it into the supply chain for the Pro models. The news that BOE has been approved to supply display panels for the iPhone 17 Pro suggests that BOE's LTPO OLED display panel technology, stability, and yield performance have met Apple's next-level requirements.
On the other hand, adding more display panel suppliers to high-end models will also allow Apple to diversify component supply risks and even further discuss cost prices with existing suppliers, or avoid over-reliance on supply from specific companies. Especially at a time when many supply chains are facing geopolitical factors, Apple may also reduce product production problems by increasing its supply partners.
For BOE, successfully entering Apple's high-end device component supply chain signifies Apple's recognition of its technology, potentially allowing it to further compete with Samsung and LG. However, the display panels currently supplied by BOE are limited to production and sales within China and do not meet the needs of production and sales outside of China.
Apple's recent supply chain strategy suggests that maintaining a multi-supplier competition will help lower costs and strengthen its negotiating leverage. Samsung remains Apple's primary supplier of high-end OLED display panels, maintaining its leading position thanks to its LTPO technology and mass production scale. LG plays a supporting role, bridging Samsung's supply shortages. The addition of BOE to the Pro lineup not only rebalances the supply mix among Korean manufacturers but also allows Apple greater flexibility in adjusting its partnership strategies.
In addition, relevant news indicates that Samsung has established a dedicated display panel production line for the foldable iPhone that Apple is rumored to launch in 2026. It is expected to become Apple's supplier of foldable screen panels in the next few years. Therefore, allowing BOE to join as the display panel supplier for the iPhone 17 Pro may also be to replace Samsung's original supply capacity and allow Samsung to shift part of its supply focus to foldable screen panels.
