After shutting down its department that built artificial intelligence models for robots in 2021,The Information websiteReports indicate that OpenAI seems intent on challenging the robotics market again.
Due to the significant progress in humanoid robot technology in recent years, especially NVIDIA'sProject GR00TTo accelerate the development efficiency of humanoid robots, robotics companies including Boston Dynamics, Tesla, 1X, Agility Robotics, Apptronik, Fourier and others have already invested in development, and many start-ups in China have also invested in the development of the robotics industry.
OpenAI previously proposed Roboschool, a toolset that can be used to train robots, in 2017, and demonstrated the results of training robotic arms to solve Rubik's Cubes in 2019. However, it seems that it disbanded the relevant robot research and development team in 2021, focusing on large-scale natural language models, and subsequently launched the ChatGPT service.
However, OpenAI appears to be resuming its robotics venture. While this hasn't been confirmed publicly, OpenAI's recent hiring of Caitlin Kalinowski, previously responsible for AR glasses hardware at Meta, to lead its robotics team, along with previous rumors that OpenAI is considering developing its own processors and possessing in-house AI modeling capabilities, may all be advantages for its robotics venture.
However, with NVIDIA accelerating the development of humanoid robots and competition from companies like Boston Dynamics that have invested in humanoid robotics for many years, OpenAI may still face considerable competitive pressure.
