Apple has officially released its 2026 Lunar New Year short film, "Glad I Met You." This year's film not only maintains its consistently high production standards but was also shot entirely on an iPhone 17 Pro. Through a heartwarming story about "missed opportunities" and "reunions," Apple once again demonstrates the capabilities of its flagship phones in low-light conditions, dynamic photography, and AI-assisted creative work.
"Meet You": Warmth and Humanity Through the Lens of Technology
Apple's Lunar New Year short film this year, "Meeting You," is directed by Bai Xue, the Chinese female director who previously directed "Crossing Spring." It tells the heartwarming story of "Xiao Bai," a gluttonous dog who gets lost during the Spring Festival. He "encounters" "Lin Wei," played by Huang Yao, riding a vehicle, and together they embark on a journey to find their way home. In the end, they heal each other and rediscover the warmth of life.
Compared to Apple's previous Lunar New Year videos, this video features real people and dogs, and combines stop-motion animation to depict inner emotions, presenting a more delicate portrayal of feelings.
In addition to choosing a more life-like narrative style, this film makes extensive use of tracking shots and natural light and shadow to present a sense of reality as seen by the human eye. This also echoes the iPhone 17 Pro's emphasis on the dynamic range and color reproduction capabilities of its imaging system.
iPhone 17 Pro Photography Secrets Revealed: Three 4800MP Lenses are Key
According to behind-the-scenes footage, the filming team made full use of several core upgrades to the iPhone 17 Pro's imaging system:
• 4800MP resolution across the entire focal length:Compared to its predecessor, the biggest evolution of the iPhone 17 Pro is the upgrade of the telephoto lens to 4800 megapixels. This allows directors to use 8x optical zoom to capture extremely detailed hair strands and catchlights in the eyes when shooting numerous close-up portraits in the film, and even when cropping and recomposing the image in post-production, it can still maintain the sharpness of 4K image quality.
• AI-powered "Cinematic Mode":There's a long take in the film where the protagonist is being searched for in a crowded scene, and the background blur effect transitions quite naturally. This is thanks to the powerful NPU computing power of the A19 Pro chip, which makes the depth-of-field calculation in "Cinematic Mode" more accurate, and can even identify and separate multi-layered background clutter in real time, eliminating the jagged edges or misjudgments that were common in the past.
• Ultimate Night Photography and Spatial Audio:The New Year's Eve fireworks scene showcased the main camera's ability to suppress light in high-contrast environments. Meanwhile, thanks to the iPhone 17 Pro's improved microphone array and "Spatial Audio Recording," the ambient sound in the video is incredibly immersive; watching it with AirPods Pro or Vision Pro will significantly enhance the viewing experience.
