In 2021, Alphabet announced that it would establish an independent robotics technology company from its X laboratory.Intrinsic, earlierAnnounceIt will integrate many NVIDIA products into its Flowstate robotics application platform, allowing it to provide more application development for software design with learning capabilities for industrial robots.
This includes the Isaac Manipulator basic model combination that was demonstrated during GTC 2024 this year, which enables various robot arms to interact with each other more precisely and accurately, and cooperates with robot industry players including Yaskawa, Solomon, PickNik Robotics, Ready Robotics, Franka Robotics and Universal Robotics.
By integrating NVIDIA's product and technical resources, Intrinsic will enable robotic arms to more accurately grasp and pick up objects for use in various automation and production line applications. Furthermore, through cross-hardware integration, Intrinsic will base the robotic arm's operating model on how to correctly pick up objects, enabling rapid adaptation to different scenarios without requiring retraining for each scenario.
The Flowstate robotics application platform was initially trained using NVIDIA's Isaac Sim robotics simulation platform, enabling the robotic arm to rapidly learn how to operate through extensive simulation. Furthermore, Intrinsic collaborated with the DeepMind team to train on over 130000 objects. This has enabled the robotic arm to determine the correct orientation of an object within seconds, enabling it to perform the correct picking action.
Intrinsic is currently researching an operating mode that allows two sets of robotic arms to work together simultaneously, so as to meet the working mode of more and more humanoid robots in the future and complete more operational tasks through "two-handed operation".
Intrinsic CEO Wendy Tan White anticipates that the robotic arms' ability to perform object grasping will significantly reduce developers' programming and training time, while also allowing companies to introduce robotic arms for automated workflows at a faster speed and lower cost.
