SAP acquired Ariba, headquartered in Palo Alto, California, in 2012, and Fieldglass, based in Chicago, in 2014. SAP subsequently renamed these two companies SAP Ariba and SAP Fieldglass, respectively, to provide enterprise procurement cost optimization and human resource scheduling services as independent subsidiaries.
This interview with Pat McCarthy, SAP Senior Vice President and General Manager of SAP Ariba and SAP Fieldglass, specifically shared how SAP is using Ariba and Fieldglass technology resources to assist companies in digital transformation, and how it is making business operations more efficient through the introduction of technologies such as resource optimization and artificial intelligence.
Ariba and Fieldglass, while distinct in their respective content, offer very similar service models when combined with SAP's resources. Ariba primarily focuses on optimizing corporate procurement, contracting, and other control processes, thereby achieving a relatively lower operating cost, while Fieldglass helps companies acquire the necessary and appropriate human resources more efficiently, thereby improving operational process efficiency and increasing their production competitiveness.
Based on Ariba's current scale and the integration of resources such as SAP IBP (Integrated Business Planning) after its acquisition by SAP, Pat McCarthy stated that this will enable companies to expand their procurement comparison capabilities globally and assist them in completing complex processes such as price comparison and contract signing, involving trillions of dollars in financial flows. It will also ensure that supply chain-related products comply with local regulations, significantly improving the efficiency of corporate procurement workflows and streamlining unnecessary costs.
As for Fieldglass's business projects focusing on human resources, it also allows companies to find suitable dispatched personnel, specific skill workers, or short-term contract workers in a more efficient manner according to current labor scheduling needs, and provides services that make it easier to manage complex operations such as contracts and payroll.
In its current development model, SAP is gradually introducing new technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain into its Ariba and Fieldglass service projects. For example, AI technology can be used to help mine and compare useful results in massive amounts of data, allowing companies to find more valuable suppliers or human resources that meet their actual needs during the comparison process. Blockchain technology can also be used to allow the relevant amounts behind services to be traded in a more secure manner, while also shortening the time it takes to complete financial transactions. Blockchain technology also makes digital contract management easier, and even allows companies to conveniently confirm complex items such as the contract validity period and contract coverage.
Compared with Alibaba, it can provide more comprehensive services
Compared to the services provided by Alibaba, Pat McCarthy said that Ariba's services can cover a more comprehensive range of projects. In addition to providing price comparisons in procurement projects, it can also manage projects such as contracts and financial flows in a simpler and more efficient manner. On the other hand, it can also be combined with Fieldglass services to allow companies to complete projects including human resources procurement in a more agile and cost-effective manner, thereby accelerating the company's development and competitive efficiency.
As global businesses begin to focus on digital transformation, Pat McCarthy stated that combining Ariba and Filedglass services with SAP's resources will provide businesses with more comprehensive digital transformation services. In particular, given that many Taiwanese businesses are closely connected to the global supply chain, he believes SAP services will help many traditional Taiwanese businesses accelerate their transformation and grow alongside the global market.
Taiwan currently plays a key role in the global supply chain and offers substantial financial transaction opportunities. However, many companies still maintain traditional operating models. Therefore, Pat McCarthy believes that traditional companies should accelerate their digital transformation efforts. Otherwise, they will inevitably lag behind in future market competition. This is especially true as more and more startups are starting with digital operating models and could surpass the scale of traditional companies at any time. This further highlights the importance of digital transformation.
Expected to assist more public sectors in digital transformation
Many companies in Taiwan have already integrated Ariba services and are leveraging Ariba's service resources to collaborate with more supply chains or promote their products. Multinational corporations including Johnson & Johnson, Lenovo, and Microsoft have all deeply integrated with Ariba services. Combined with Fieldglass's human resources-focused services, Pat McCarthy anticipates that these two SAP services will help more Taiwanese companies achieve digital transformation and accelerate their global growth.
SAP has also previously collaborated with the cities of Santa Clara, California, and Toronto, Canada, applying Ariba services to public procurement needs. This, combined with the government's transparency and openness to public information, has further streamlined and made the procurement process easier to manage, thereby improving operational efficiency. SAP believes these collaborations can be replicated in Taiwan, collaborating with local public agencies to enable government agencies to digitally transform through new technologies and achieve the government's ongoing digital development initiatives.
