Instagram head: There's too much content for AI to handle; in the future, we should be tagging "real photos" instead of AI.
He frankly stated that "refined aesthetics" is dead and suggested that creators instead post "unrefined" real photos to prove their identity.

With generative AI set to completely dominate social media by 2025, Instagram head Adam Mosseri made a controversial statement earlier."2026 Trend Forecast"He bluntly stated that he expects AI-generated content to surpass real images in every way. In this era where it is difficult to distinguish between real and fake, it is no longer practical to try to label all AI content. The logic of the future will be completely reversed: we will no longer capture "fake" images, but will verify "real" images.

Instagram head: There's too much content for AI to handle; in the future, we should be tagging "real photos" instead of AI.

Admitting AI detection failure, passing the buck to camera manufacturers

In his lengthy article, Adam Mosseri points out that as AI becomes more and more capable of mimicking reality, the mechanisms by which major social media platforms identify AI (such as watermarks or detection algorithms) will eventually fail and become increasingly inaccurate as AI technology advances.

Therefore, he put forward the view that "identifying the true publisher of content is far more practical than identifying fake content."

Adam Mosseri suggested that camera equipment manufacturers (presumably including mobile phone brands such as Apple and Samsung, as well as traditional camera manufacturers) should "cryptographically sign" images at the moment of shooting, establishing a complete digital chain of custody. This statement has been interpreted by outsiders as Meta's tacit admission that its heavily invested AI detection technology has failed, and an attempt to shift the responsibility for verification to hardware manufacturers.

Are perfect photos like they were taken by AI? Creators, please "take ugly" photos.

Adam Mosseri's advice for long-time Instagram creators and photographers is intriguing, even ironic.

He believes that the "polished" aesthetic of images that was once prevalent on Instagram is "dead." The reason is simple: AI can now easily generate images with perfect lighting and flawless composition.

Adam Mosseri bluntly stated that to prove they are "real" and not AI, creators should pursue a more "raw" and even "unflattering" visual style. In his view, if camera companies are still trying to make everyone look like a professional photographer, they have "bet on the wrong horse"; in 2026, only by preserving imperfections and authenticity can human creators survive.

Analysis: Is this just an excuse to turn the platform into an AI farm?

Meta, boasting 30 billion users and massive AI computing power, shrugged and said, "There's too much AI for us to handle," shifting the responsibility of verifying authenticity to upstream hardware manufacturers. AlthoughC2PA and other digital signature technologiesIt is indeed a trend, but that does not mean that platforms can abandon their responsibility to screen content.

Even more worrying is that Adam Mosseri's statement is tantamount to a death sentence for professional photographers. If a beautifully composed and meticulously edited photograph is deemed AI-generated by an algorithm and demoted because it is "too perfect," then what right does Instagram have to be called a photography sharing platform?

Adam Mosseri's prediction may reflect reality—Instagram will be flooded with AI-generated content (AI Slop), forcing real users to share crude, unedited photos to prove their innocence. This doesn't sound like a bright future; it sounds more like a chaotic content farm.
