Bethesda officially unveiled its game streaming technology, developed by id Software, at its E3 2019 pre-show event.Orion, claiming to provide a higher-quality streaming gaming experience with lower latency.
During the demonstration, id Software CTO Robert Duffy explained that Orion-related technologies will be directly integrated into the game engine, enabling the game itself to reduce streaming latency, boosting overall streaming efficiency by 20% and reducing bandwidth usage by 40%. This will also reduce latency-related disruptions to the player experience, while also saving game developers money on user experience maintenance costs.
At the same time, "Orion" is a fully software application technology and is not based on a specific hardware environment. Therefore, it can also be used on streaming service platforms such as Google Stadia or Microsoft Project xCloud, which means it is mainly optimized for game content streaming applications.
Optimized for Orion, Doom demonstrated virtually zero lag in this demonstration. id Software will also be opening up its Orion technology to the public, allowing players to experience streaming the 2016 Doom at home.
However, the first wave of open support testing models for "Orion" are mobile devices with iOS 11 or iOS 12 operating system versions. It is expected that support for Android platform models will be added in the future, but this has not been confirmed yet.
