IBM earlier announced a partnership with data streaming and processing software provider Confluent.Final agreement reachedIBM will acquire Confluent for approximately $110 billion (all in cash) at $31 per share. This is another major investment by IBM in the hybrid cloud and data infrastructure field, following its acquisitions of Red Hat and HashiCorp.
Targeting the Apache Kafka ecosystem to solve the problem of AI data silos
Confluent, headquartered in Mountain View, California, is a provider of commercial solutions based on the open-source project Apache Kafka. It currently serves over 6500 customers, including 40% of the Fortune 500 companies. Its core products, such as Confluent Cloud and Confluent Platform, primarily assist enterprises in managing, connecting, and analyzing real-time data streams, and are widely used in scenarios such as banking transaction processing and website traffic analysis.
IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna pointed out that as enterprises accelerate the deployment of generative AI and agentic AI services, data is often scattered across public clouds, private clouds, data centers, and countless third-party platforms, forming data silos.
By acquiring Confluent, IBM will gain powerful data streaming capabilities, enabling it to instantly connect, integrate, and manage data across different environments, providing a reliable foundation for AI computing. In other words, IBM intends to create a "smart data platform" specifically designed for AI, facilitating smoother communication between different environments and APIs.
Revenue growth faces headwinds; new momentum is injected through mergers and acquisitions.
Market analysts believe this deal is IBM's response to strengthen its competitiveness in cloud services. As IBM's third-quarter financial report showed signs of slowing revenue growth in its core software and services, raising investor concerns, acquiring a high-growth software company to inject new momentum was imperative.
This is not IBM's only major acquisition recently. Prior to this, IBM acquired cloud infrastructure software provider HashiCorp for $64 billion last year and IT management provider Apptio for $46 billion in 2023.
The transaction is expected to be completed by mid-2026.
Under the agreement, IBM will acquire Confluent for $31 per share in cash. The transaction has been approved by IBM’s board of directors and Confluent’s independent special committee.
Both parties currently anticipate completing the transaction by mid-2026, subject to approval from Confluent shareholders and review by relevant regulatory bodies. At that time, Confluent's Apache Kafka and Apache Flink technologies will be deeply integrated into IBM's product line, further solidifying its position in the hybrid cloud and enterprise AI market.
