What new tricks can smartphones come up with? At its MWC 2026 pre-show event, Honor gave a rather futuristic and bold answer, showcasing a brand-new concept phone called "Robot Phone." Its biggest highlight is the integration of a "retractable mechanical gimbal camera" on the back of the phone, combined with powerful multimodal AI applications, attempting to completely evolve the phone from a simple communication tool into an "AI robot companion" with active vision and flexible joints.

According to the official description, Robot Phone is a revolutionary project that "combines multimodal intelligence, advanced robotics technology and next-generation imaging," which also foreshadows Honor's future development direction in the field of AI hardware.

Breaking the limitations of fixed lenses: Built-in slider and miniature mechanical gimbal

Although it is currently being presented as a concept, Honor emphasizes that the Robot Phone is not just a concept phone design, but a product that will actually be brought to market, although no specific launch plan has been announced yet.

In terms of appearance, the Robot Phone is significantly thicker than conventional smartphones on the market today to accommodate its complex mechanical structure. Its rear camera module is divided into two parts, with the left side concealing a protective cover controlled by a sliding mechanical mechanism. When the user triggers a specific function, a built-in micro-motor pushes a set of mechanical gimbal cameras out from inside the device.

This extended camera arm has multi-axis rotation capability, allowing it to flexibly turn in almost any direction, so that the phone is no longer limited to shooting from a rigid "directly in front" or "directly behind" perspective.

More than just a camera, it's an AI-powered personal advisor that can "see".

When this gimbal camera extends (accompanied by anthropomorphic sound effects), it will exhibit a high degree of autonomy.

Thanks to its flexible camera positioning, the Robot Phone can easily take selfies or videos from all sorts of challenging angles. More importantly, this lens can "rotate independently" and actively observe. Through AI vision for real-time recognition, the phone is no longer just a passive shooting tool, but can transform into the user's "personal fashion consultant" or close AI assistant, constantly sensing its surroundings through a physically rotating lens.

Furthermore, Honor emphasizes that the Robot Phone features the industry's smallest and lightest micro-motor design, as well as the industry's smallest four-degree-of-freedom gimbal system. This combines the robot's flexible "body" with the "brain" played by Honor's AI intelligent agent. Through a three-axis anti-shake system and a 2-megapixel lens, along with imaging technology in collaboration with ARRI, it will drive the experience of computer vision AI applications on mobile devices.

"Alpha Plan" launched: Shedding its smartphone manufacturer label, investing billions of dollars in AI.

Attentive users may notice that the back of this concept phone does not feature the familiar "Honor" logo; instead, it displays a prominent "Alpha" symbol.

This actually echoes the major vision announced by Honor at its pre-MWC 2026 event – the "Alpha Plan." This plan symbolizes Honor's transformation from a "pure smartphone manufacturer" to a "comprehensive AI device ecosystem supplier."

Honor's humanoid robot also made its debut at the event, emphasizing that it was designed for application scenarios such as retail, housework, and companionship. The data from the Robot Phone will be shared with the robot, thereby achieving seamless collaboration between the phone, the robot, and the home.

To this end, Honor has put forward a check for up to $100 billion, which it expects to invest entirely in AI research and development over the next five years.

Alpha Plan's strategy is currently divided into three distinct phases:

• Developing smart AI devices:Such as the Robot Phone shown here.

• Building an AI ecosystem:By connecting various devices together, seamless interaction can be achieved.

• Creating a world of wisdom:To achieve the ultimate AI vision.

Analysis of viewpoints

When the development of smartphone appearance had reached a stalemate between "a glass tablet" and "a foldable screen", Honor's Robot Phone truly brought a visually striking new vision to the market.

While directly "cramming" the miniature gimbal structure from a drone or three-axis stabilizer into a mobile phone can greatly enhance the freedom of image creation and the flexibility of AI perception, from the perspective of engineering physics, such complex mechanical structures, including sliding rails, micro motors, and extension arms, are undoubtedly a major killer of the phone's "durability" and "waterproof and dustproof" properties. Achieving mass production without sacrificing too much battery space and thickness is extremely difficult.

However, the purpose of a "concept phone" is to flex muscles and point the way. The significance of the Robot Phone may not lie in when we can buy it, but rather in Honor's attempt to use this phone, which can rotate its camera on its own, to strongly declare its strong ambition to invest billions of dollars in the "Alpha Plan" to the global market.
