HMD showcased its OffGrid satellite emergency call device at CES 2025, allowing users to make emergency calls while outdoors.
Like GarmininReach series portable satellite communication equipmentSimilarly, OffGrid is designed to be portable and claims to be able to directly connect to satellite signals in various harsh environments, thereby communicating through the L-band satellite radio spectrum. It can be used with a dedicated app to send text messages to stay in touch with family and friends, while sharing the location with rescue units.
The OffGrid itself adopts the US military standard MIL-STD 810H design and is designed in the form of a keychain ring, which is convenient for carrying on items such as backpacks. At the same time, the battery life can reach about 3 days and the weight is only 60 grams.
HMD Global plans to sell OffGrid in the United States, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand in January, and in more countries and regions later. The suggested retail price is $1 and requires a subscription plan.
The subscription plan is divided into two options: HMD Unlimited and HMD Freedom. The former can send unlimited text messages and confirm safety signals. The one-time activation fee for the first use is US$9.99. The original one-year subscription fee was US$179.88, but now it is US$139.99 a year, or paid in installments at US$14.99 per month. The latter can only send 350 sets of text messages and confirm safety signals. The one-time activation fee for the first use is US$19.99, and it needs to be paid for at US$79.99 a year.
Both subscription plans can be purchased with real-time tracking service for $4.99 per month.
