Blizzard Entertainment officially unveiled its first major update of the year during its "2026 Hearthstone Highlights Livestream" held early this morning (February 10th). The new expansion, Cataclysm, is confirmed to launch on March 18th.
While this theme pays homage to the classic version of World of Warcraft, it incorporates a dark parallel universe setting—in this timeline, Deathwing has won. Players will join forces with Chromie, who has traveled through time, and the dragonflight to try and reverse this destructive fate.
In addition, the official announcement also stated that 2026 will be named "Year of the Beetle" and foreshadowed a major rotation of the core series.
Despair in a Parallel Universe: Mdozno's Conspiracy
The development team stated that this story was inspired by one of the most momentous events in Azeroth's history, but it is not a simple reenactment of history. The plot describes how "M'dozno" brought Deathwing from a parallel universe, who had already achieved complete victory, into the current Hearthstone world.
To combat this most powerful world destroyer in history, players must unite the heroes of time and the dragon legion. This is also reflected in the card design, which will include not only brand-new hero cards but also class spells that showcase moments of "last stand" or "triumph."
Three key words: "mega" return, "omen" and "shattering".
In terms of gameplay mechanics, this expansion introduces a returning mechanic and two brand-new keywords:
• Colossal Return:The highly acclaimed "Giant" minions from "Undersea Adventure" are making a triumphant return. These cards automatically summon additional limbs upon being played, instantly flooding the board. This time, each class will have its own exclusive Giant Minion, with six classes receiving Deathwing's lieutenant.
• New keywords:Omen is a mechanic belonging to the "Villains" (Deathwing faction). Cards with this keyword become more powerful the more they are used, symbolizing the approaching disaster.
• New keywords for Deathwing faction:Fracture is a mechanic belonging to the "Good" faction (Dragon Legion). When a player draws a Fracture card, it splits into two and is placed in the leftmost and rightmost corners of their hand. The player can choose to play them separately or "meet" them in their hand by playing the middle card. Once combined, they will have double the strength and value.
Welcoming the "Year of the Beetle": Old Card Sets Available for Free
With the release of the new expansion, Hearthstone will also enter the "Year of the Beetle." The official announcement revealed the rotation list for the core sets: classic and powerful cards such as "Brawl" and "Shadow Blink" will be temporarily rotated out of Standard, and will be replaced by cards such as "Slaughter" and "Deadly Shadows."
What surprised players the most was that, in order to help everyone fight against Deathwing, the official team announced an unprecedented benefit: starting from March 11th, all players will be able to use every card (including golden cards) from the past Emerald Dream and Labyrinth of Un'Goro sets for free in Standard mode. The usage period covers the entire Cataclysm expansion cycle, meaning that players will have a much larger free deck to build decks.
In addition, the official announcement also revealed clues about the second expansion: the infamous Vanessa VanCleef is planning to escape from Violet Castle, and a group of outlaws will appear with her.
