Alphabet's drone logistics startupWing.Officially announcedGoogle has expanded its drone delivery service to the San Francisco Bay Area. The service boasts the ability to airdrop fresh groceries, meals, and small packages weighing no more than 5 pounds (approximately 2.27 kg) directly to consumers' backyards in 30 minutes or less. This "moonshot" project, which originated in Silicon Valley and initially only delivered office supplies within Google's headquarters campus, has now officially opened to local Bay Area residents, marking a significant "glorious homecoming."
From actual testing in the Mountain View City park to its actual entry into ordinary people's homes
Looking back at Wing's history, this service has a deep technological connection with the Bay Area.
In its early days, when Wing was still an experimental project within Google's secretive innovation incubator "X," the team's initial test scenario involved using automated drones to deliver office supplies between different buildings within Google's headquarters campus in Mountain View. According to the Wing team, many employees and users involved in the early testing strongly urged that the service be expanded to general household delivery.
After years of technological iteration and regulatory breakthroughs, this automated drone is now finally ready to provide services to local residents in the Bay Area.
With a load capacity of 5 pounds and a delivery time of half an hour, its expansion has taken it all over the United States.
In addition to announcing its entry into the Bay Area, Wing's recent expansion speed has been quite astonishing.
Earlier this year, Wing expanded its service to include more than 100,000 locations across the United States.150 Walmart partner locationsThe network covers major metropolitan areas including Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami. In terms of service capacity, Wing has also successfully expanded its service network to include Charlotte, North Carolina, after obtaining approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, TexasThe company has significantly extended its operating hours to 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., in order to meet consumers' on-demand delivery needs around the clock.
