Following the release of new action cameras by DJI and Insta360, GoPro, the pioneer of action cameras, has finally officially unveiled its new GoPro HERO12 Black. As previously announced, the camera boasts significantly improved shooting time, new HDR video capture, and the ability to use Log mode to unify video tones. It also adds features like timecode synchronization, multiple Bluetooth device connectivity, and the ability to use a wireless microphone. It even features a 1/4-inch screw hole on the bottom of the camera for quick and easy attachment of accessories.
This time, the shooting power will be extended. The recording time of 4K 120fps video can be extended by 107%, and the recording time of 5.3K 60fps video can be extended by 100%. GoPro emphasizes that it is not using a brand new battery design, but optimizing the existing battery system through software. Combined with the Enduro low-temperature long-life battery, the shooting time is greatly extended.
The focus of this update also includes the addition of HDR video recording function to preserve more image details.10-bit color added in the previous generationLater, GoPro HERO12 Black finally added the Log file, allowing the GP-Log file to be applied during post-production to unify the colors of videos shot with different devices. This is obviously a response to the design added by competitors.
At the same time, in the still image shooting part, a customizable interval shooting function has been added, allowing the camera to automatically shoot at intervals, without the user having to hold the camera all the time or manually press the shutter to shoot.
To meet the demand for stable shooting effects for action cameras, GoPro HERO12 Black has added HyperSmooth 6.0 anti-shake technology, which can maintain stable shooting images through AutoBoost and 360-degree horizontal lock, and can also keep the picture level through 360-degree horizon lock.
In terms of specifications, the GoPro HERO12 Black retains the same 1/1.9-inch, 2700-megapixel sensor as its predecessor. GoPro emphasizes that this specification is sufficient for use, believing that blindly increasing the sensor size with current technology will not bring about significant changes, but it may increase the risk of overheating during long recordings. Therefore, it has not adopted a larger sensor like its competitors.
The camera retains its 10-meter submersible rating, and features a 1/4-inch screw hole on the bottom for quick and easy attachment of accessories. New features include the ability to connect to multiple Bluetooth devices simultaneously (up to four), wireless microphone support, AirPods and other Bluetooth headphones, and the ability to synchronize video timecodes between devices by scanning a QR code.
In terms of video creation, the GoPro HERO12 Black mainly improves the night shooting effect, and allows users to more easily shoot star trails, light painting, car light trails and other scenes. In addition, it can also be used with the enhanced Max lens to shoot images with a nearly 180-degree viewing angle.
The GoPro Hero12 Black will be available for sale in Taiwan for NT$14900 starting at 9:13 PM on September 9th. The HERO12 Black Creator Edition, which comes with accessories like a battery grip, has a suggested retail price of NT$22400, while the enhanced Max lens version has a suggested retail price of NT$3600.
GoPro also announced that it will launch a desktop version of Quik editing software. It is expected that the Mac platform version will be released first this fall, and the Windows version will be further released in 2024. The main purpose is to allow users to edit videos conveniently through the larger screen of the desktop.
