Google had previously pushed for a test version of the Chromebook in 2022.Play Steam service gamesHowever, it has now announced that it will terminate all technical support for Steam services on Chromebooks from January 2026, 1.

Google will end support for Steam games on Chromebooks

9to5Google websiteReportIt is pointed out that if you try to install the Steam service on a new Chromebook, a prompt will pop up saying "The Chromebook Steam Beta test program will end on January 2026, 1. At that time, games installed in the test program will no longer be playable on the device. We thank you for your participation and the valuable feedback you provided, which will serve as a reference for the future development of Chromebook games." This means that after several years of testing, Google will terminate its plan to allow users to play Steam service games on Chromebooks.

Google is expected to partner with Valve at the GDC 2022 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco in 2022.jointly announced, will enable Chromebooks to install Steam services, and be able to run more games on Steam services through Chromebook performance, and even attract laptop manufacturers such as ASUS and Acer to launchMore high-performance Chromebooks.

However, from the perspective of Chromebook's overall market strategy, high performance is not its main feature. Therefore, even if Steam service games can be run on Chromebook, the actual executable game content is still limited, and it is even difficult to meet the execution requirements of 3A-level games.

On the other hand, more gamers actually prefer to play games on high-performance laptops, which means that the market user group setting does not meet the expected benefits. Therefore, Google's decision to cancel support for Steam services on Chromebooks does not seem surprising.

However, users can still play games through cloud streaming services such as NVIDIA GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming by leveraging the Chromebook's internet connection features. Even considering that Chromebooks can still run Android games, users can still play many games available on the Google Play Store.
