As previously announcedThe update time of the official version of the Android operating system will be adjusted in the future, Google quickly announced the release of the first development preview version of Android 16 to developers, and confirmed that it would release a beta test version to everyone in January 2025, and the platform stable version is expected to be released in March 1, and the official version is expected to be released after April 2025.
The first development preview version of Android 16 provided to developers this time will first correspond to the Pixel 6 series, Pixel 7 series, Pixel 8 series and Pixel 9 series. It can also be used for Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and Pixel Tablet.
However, even if developers have previously installed the Android 15 development preview version, they will not be upgraded directly through OTA. They must manually install it to get the Android 16 development preview version update.
In this update, Google also explained that as the Android operating system update schedule adjusts, major API content updates will be released in the second quarter in response to the official version, and minor API update projects will be provided in the fourth quarter, focusing mainly on function enhancements and system optimization.
Currently, the new version of Android 16 mainly allows apps to use mobile phones to store media content more efficiently and ensure user privacy and security, allowing apps to only use specific selected media content stored in the device or cloud services, rather than all media data. In addition, health record-related functions are added, supporting reading and writing medical-related information in FHIR format, and further strengthening the privacy sandbox function introduced since Android 13. At the same time, the security of data use is ensured through the SDK independent execution environment.
Google usually provides developers with a preview test version when announcing a new version of the Android operating system at the annual Google I/O developer event, and the official version of the operating system will be released around the third quarter of that year.
However, considering the needs of developers and the accelerating pace of service updates, Google began to adjust a few years ago to provide developers with preview versions of the new Android operating system around the second quarter of each year, allowing developers more time to prepare the design of new application services in advance, but the official version is still released in the third quarter of each year.
On the other hand, with more and more brands launching new phones earlier and earlier, such as the recent announcements of new flagship processors by Qualcomm and MediaTek, many brands have been bringing new phones to market at a faster pace. Perhaps this has led Google to decide to release new versions of the Android operating system more quickly, allowing developers and users to experience the new operating system features more quickly.
