Announced at Google I/O 2024, this feature allows users to search Google Photos content using natural language.Ask Photos featureAfter suspending the launch of adjustments a few days ago, GoogleAnnounceThis feature has been reopened in the United States, and adjustments have been made to address slow response and interface design, emphasizing the ability to provide search results faster while retaining the intelligent understanding capabilities brought by the Gemini AI model.
Combine traditional search with AI response to speed up the user experience
According to Google, the biggest focus of this adjustment is speed. Originally, Ask Photos relied entirely on the Gemini AI model to process all search commands, but this architecture significantly slowed down the response time for simple searches.
The new version introduces a hybrid search mechanism. When a user enters a query, Google Photos' original image recognition system will first return quick preliminary results, such as looking for photos of specific people, animals or scenes. In the background, the Gemini AI model will continue to be activated to handle more complex inference tasks, and finally provide a complete answer.
This design allows common searches to be displayed instantly while retaining the advantages of AI's deep understanding, improving the user experience where users previously had to click through multiple layers of menus and wait for lengthy processing.
Terms of Use and Scope of Support
The Ask Photos feature is currently only available in the United States and requires the following conditions to be met:
• Users must be 18 years of age or older
• Google Account language set to English
• Enable the Face Groups feature in Google Photos
This feature still maintains a chat-style interface design. Users can directly enter semantic questions such as "Which sushi restaurant did you go to on my birthday last year?" or "What is the license plate of my car?" The system will make inferences based on metadata such as the content of the photo, time and location, and even analyze the text in the image, identify buildings or signs and other detailed information to provide answers.
Multi-layer search structure complements intelligence and efficiency
In response to users' demand for faster traditional search, the new version transforms the original "AI response only" strategy into an "AI + traditional" dual-engine design.
For example:
• Enter "Max's photo": The system will first display Max's face classification results, and then add a summary of events related to Max
• Search for "Photos of Skiing": Snow photos will appear first, and then the time, location and travel history will be added later
• Ask “What was the name of the restaurant you went to on your birthday?”: AI analyzes the location of the photo taken that day and infers the name of the restaurant
The overall interface no longer replaces the original search bar, but is integrated into the existing Photos search to improve intuitive operability and efficiency.
As Google continues to enhance its Gemini model and search experience, Ask Photos will become a key highlight of future photo apps. Beyond finding photos, AI-powered image search will further serve as a "memory assistant," helping users quickly capture precious moments and life clues from vast image archives. Whether this feature will expand to more regions and languages remains to be seen when Google announces its future updates.
