Gemini for Home: More natural voice interaction
The era of Gemini for Home, where users previously relied on precise syntax to communicate with Google Assistant, will come to an end. Google emphasizes that Gemini understands contextual language. For example, if a user says, "I want to watch a movie, turn off the lights," the system can automatically interpret and control the living room lights. It even supports chaining multiple requests and creating automated scenarios directly using natural language, eliminating the need for manual configuration within the Google Home app.
Furthermore, the Gemini Live feature allows users to engage in continuous conversations with AI, no longer limited to the "Hey Google" wake-up phrase. Camera devices have also been enhanced with AI, using semantic analysis to determine in-screen events and answering questions like "Did I forget to close the car door?" through the "Ask Home" feature.
Another function, Home Brief, can compress several hours of surveillance footage into a summary of key points, allowing users to quickly grasp the dynamics of their home and confirm whether there are any abnormalities at home.
However, these advanced features will be bundled with the Google Home Premium subscription plan, which costs $10 per month. In addition to AI features, Gemini for Home also includes 30 days of cloud image storage service and is integrated with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscription plans.
Google Home app completely revamped
With the launch of the Gemini for Home service, the Google Home app has undergone a major overhaul. The new app features three new tabs: Home, Activities, and Automations. It also introduces a permanent Ask Home AI feature at the top, allowing users to operate the entire home system using natural language.
Google emphasized that the new version of the App is not only more intuitive, but also has greatly improved performance. For example, the loading speed is increased by 70%, the camera screen opens 30% faster, the playback failure rate is reduced by 40%, the overall crash rate is reduced by nearly 80%, and power consumption is optimized for Android devices.
The new generation of Google Home smart speakers and Nest cameras
On the hardware front, Google has confirmed that it will launch a new Google Home smart speaker in spring 2026 with a suggested retail price of just $99. Powered by Gemini technology, the new speaker offers more natural voice interaction, 360-degree audio, and the ability to pair with Google TV for surround sound.
The new generation of Google Home smart speakers are available in four colors: porcelain white, hazelnut, jasper, and raspberry red, and have a physical microphone off button to take privacy needs into consideration.
At the same time, Google also released the new generation of Nest Doorbell and Nest Cam series, which have been fully upgraded to 2K HDR resolution and a wider viewing angle. The low-light shooting capability has been improved by 120%, and the full-color image can be maintained for a longer period of time.
Combined with Gemini AI, the new camera can intelligently zoom, generate more precise notifications, and provide contextual summaries through the Ask Home and Home Brief features. The Nest Cam Indoor will be priced at $100, the Nest Cam Outdoor at $150, and the Nest Doorbell at $180.
New landscape of competition for AI assistants
Google's latest smart home updates not only demonstrate its commitment to expanding Gemini into more everyday scenarios, but also represent a clear response to Amazon's Alexa+. With the introduction of AI into semantic understanding and automated scenarios, the smart home experience is becoming more natural and proactive.
