Google announces its AI research assistant serviceNotebookLMThe video summary function "Video Overview" now supports 80 languages. At the same time, the voice summary function "Audio Overview" has also added detailed explanation capabilities in non-English environments.
This wave of updates adds new languages including Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Spanish and other major languages, and is gradually being rolled out in global regions.
NotebookLM from July 2023DebutAfter that, it provides the function of generating summaries and questions and answers based on specified data sources. Users can upload Google Docs documents, presentations, PDFs, web URLs, or YouTube video links (must be set to public status), and then AI can automatically organize the content and generate key summaries, mind maps, and other content. It can even generate voice conversations or ask questions about the content.
Video Overview: Convert information into short videos to quickly grasp the key points
The Video Overview feature converts uploaded content into short videos, allowing users to quickly grasp key points through visual format. This feature is ideal for students reviewing course content, researchers mastering the key points of academic publications, and DIY enthusiasts learning complex operational processes. This feature was first available in English in July of this year, and this update significantly expands the supported languages, allowing users around the world to generate video summaries directly in their native language, thereby improving learning and research efficiency.
Audio Overview: Two-channel commentary, adjustable length, and detailed analysis of non-English materials
Complementing the Video Overview feature, Audio Overview generates discussion-style dialogues in both male and female voices, providing narration and analysis of the uploaded content. Users can customize the length of the audio, creating short highlights or full explanations. Previously, only brief summaries were generated for non-English speakers. This update now allows non-English speakers to access detailed analysis results, further enhancing NotebookLM's value as a cross-lingual research tool.
Towards multilingual AI assistant applications
Google said that the goal of NotebookLM's multilingual update is to reduce language barriers, allowing students, researchers, and professional creators from more countries and regions to quickly understand large amounts of information on the same platform and convert the content into audio and video formats for easy review, analysis, and presentation.
This also demonstrates Google's strategy of continuously deepening the multilingual capabilities of its AI assistants, especially in education and scientific research application scenarios, which is expected to further improve productivity and cross-cultural collaboration efficiency.
