Google announced that it will expand its Gemini AI across its services.Integration ScopeThis update to Google Maps will replace the existing Google Assistant with Gemini AI, allowing users to navigate and interact with the system in a more natural, conversational manner while driving.
Supports continuous dialogue and multitasking, and allows you to report traffic conditions in English.
After importing Gemini, users will be able to make more complex and conversational commands, such as: "Are there any affordable Japanese restaurants within a few miles of my route?"
More importantly, Gemini supports follow-up questions. After the AI responds, users can ask, "Does that restaurant have parking?" or "What dishes are popular there?" Once a destination is decided, simply say "Okay, let's go there," and the system will automatically start navigation.
Furthermore, during navigation, users can request Gemini to handle random tasks without leaving the Google Maps interface, such as "add the event to my calendar." Users can even verbally report road conditions, such as "There's flooding ahead" or "I saw an accident."
The US market was the first to adopt AI-powered landmark guidance and Google Lens search.
In addition to the core conversational navigation features mentioned above, Google also announced the first launch of several unique features powered by Gemini in the US market:
• Landmark Directions:It will be released on Android and iOS successively.
The navigation voice will be more realistic, for example, changing "Turn left after 500 feet" to "Turn left after passing the Thai-Siam restaurant." The landmark will also be highlighted on Google Maps as a visual cue.
• Proactive Notifications:Available only on Android initially
Even when navigation is not enabled, Maps will proactively notify users of any disturbances along the way.
• Google Maps integrates Google Lens and Gemini:Android/iOS expected to launch later this month
Users can click the camera icon in the Google Maps search bar to activate the Google Lens function, point the lens at a store or building, and then ask Gemini AI questions, such as, "What place is this? Why is it famous?", to which Gemini AI will provide the answers.
Release schedule
Google says the main "Gemini in Google Maps" conversational navigation feature will be rolled out to all regions on Android and iOS where Gemini is available in the coming weeks, and the feature is also confirmed to be coming to Android Auto in the future.
