GarminAnnounceGoogle Maps navigation service is now available through its Connect IQ Storefree downloadThe new feature is available on selected Garmin smartwatches, providing users with more immediate and convenient navigation functions, making the watch the best assistant for outdoor sports and daily commuting.
The Google Maps service now available on the Garmin platform provides complete route planning and navigation reminder functions synchronized with the mobile phone. After users complete setting the destination in the Android version of Google Maps, it will automatically sync to the Garmin watch via Bluetooth, and users can receive real-time turn notifications and route reminders through the watch.
During navigation, the watch vibrates to alert users of upcoming turns or route changes. This eliminates the need to constantly stare at the phone screen; simply glance at the watch to quickly grasp the route ahead, further enhancing convenience and safety while walking or cycling. If you prefer to avoid frequent checkups, you can adjust the settings to preview the next three turns, giving you a better idea of your route ahead.
However, Google Maps on Garmin watches currently only supports connection with the Android platform. Although the Garmin Connect IQ App can also be downloaded and used on iOS platform devices, this update does not yet support iPhones.
Garmin said that this integration will not affect the watch's original sports recording function. Activity data such as walking, running, and cycling can still be recorded normally during navigation. Users do not need to worry about conflicts between the two and maintain a consistent and complete sports recording experience.
Garmin watch models that support Google Maps include the Venu, Forerunner, Vivoactive, and designated Fenix series models. A complete list of supported models can be found on the Garmin official website or Connect IQ Store.
In addition to being available on Garmin watches, Google Maps has also been available on the Apple Watch. It can also be used on Wear OS devices, such as the Pixel Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch (supporting Wear OS models), with offline map navigation, allowing users to navigate on their watches without their phones. The addition of Google Maps to Garmin watches clearly allows Garmin to further enhance its watch lineup with a more comprehensive range of outdoor applications, allowing users to enjoy outdoor activities through convenient on-watch navigation.
