The Information websiteCiting sources from TSMC and Broadcom, Google plans to work with MediaTek to create a lower-cost TPU, with production expected to begin in 2026.
Prior to this, there were reports that Google might end its TPU design partnership with Broadcom before 2027. This time, it was reported that Google might switch to working with TSMC to build a lower-cost TPU, partly because its price was lower than Broadcom's.
However, although Google may turn to cooperation with TSMC, its original cooperation relationship with Broadcom may still be maintained, which means that Broadcom must split Google's TPU orders with TSMC.
According to relevant sources, Google will still complete the majority of the design of the next TPU, while MediaTek will mainly provide the communication input and output design between the TPU and related components, assist in confirming production quality control, and also take the role of placing orders with TSMC.
The previous cooperation model between Google and Broadcom was that Broadcom assisted in developing the core details of TPU. Therefore, the news that Google has switched to cooperating with MediaTek this time is significantly different from the cooperation model with Broadcom.
Last year, Google announced itsThe 6th generation TPU, codenamed TrilliumIt also explains that it is used to accelerate many of its network services and is also an option for many accelerated computing methods of Google Cloud services. Other options include cooperation with Intel, AMD, NVDIA and other industry players to provide processors, and the subsequent addition of customized processors "Axion" built on the Arm Neroverse architecture to meet the differences in computing deployment needs of different customers.
