After Google previously announced its support for the Matter universal IoT protocol, it released a test update project earlier, which will allow devices to directly control IoT devices without connecting to the Internet through the new Home Runtime function.
Currently, many home internet-connected devices require an internet connection to be used. If the internet is disconnected (for example, due to non-payment), these devices may not function properly.
The Home Runtime feature added by Google this time allows Matter-compatible IoT devices that can be controlled through the Google Home platform to operate through this function even when not connected to the Internet, allowing users to maintain the normal operation of home IoT devices, such as home lights or air conditioning systems, when disconnected from the Internet.
Google will provide developers with API resources called related APIs, enabling them to create IoT applications compatible with Google Home, thereby creating application products compatible with Home Runtime functions.
At the same time, Google also stated that the Home Runtime function will support more than 4000 million IoT devices, including Google Nest, Chromecast, Google TV, LG brand TVs and Android 14 basic application products. In addition, it also cooperates with the CSA Alliance to expand support for multiple Matter-compatible devices, and cooperates with MediaTek to design connection chips for Wi-Fi, low-power Bluetooth and Thread, thereby expanding the development of Thread connection applications.
