Following the recent update of Google Assistant, which added more visual content display capabilities, Google also officially unveiled the new Google Home Hub at a New York press conference. This new device, similar to smart displays created by manufacturers like Lenovo, not only features Google Assistant functionality but can also display audio and video content directly on the screen, provide map directions, and even allow users to have video conversations or operate home connected devices through voice control or direct clicks.
Like Amazon's already launched Echo Show, or the smart displays that combine screens and Google Assistant previously developed by manufacturers such as Lenovo, the Google Home Hub will integrate the Google Assistant function through a touch screen, allowing users to more quickly confirm their personal daily schedule, or display YouTube videos on the screen, or even display driving routes through Google Maps.
To prevent screen brightness from interfering with daily life, Google Home Hub has also added an automatic brightness adjustment function called Ambient EQ. In addition, an automatic album function has been introduced during normal standby mode, allowing users to automatically display photos stored in Google Photos or use Google's selected photos to display on the screen.
However, unlike similar products that offer additional video cameras, the Google Home Hub lacks any camera functionality, thus avoiding unnecessary privacy concerns. Content controls also allow for additional restrictions, preventing inappropriate content from being displayed or music inappropriate for children. It also incorporates Google's own Titan security chip to prevent personal content from being accessed.
As a new home information center, Google has also made the Google Home Hub more intuitive with its Home View interface, displaying the operational functions of connected devices in the home, as well as real-time information such as temperature and humidity. Users can also directly adjust functions through voice control or taps. To ensure users have a similar user experience, Google has also provided a new Home app for mobile phones, allowing users to operate the same functions and adjustments through their phones.
In terms of connected device support, Google said that Google Home Hub will be able to connect and interact with more than 1000 million devices from 2 brands, including products from Sony, Vizio, GE Electronics, Nest, and Philips.
Google Home Hub is available for pre-order starting today with a suggested retail price of $149. It will be launched in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia on October 10nd in four colors: pastel green, pink, blue, and white. Google will also provide an additional six months of YouTube Premium service.
