Google announced a new generation of AI assistant, previously teased in August and designed specifically for smart home devices."Gemini for Home"The official launch of the Early Access program in the US market signifies that the existing Google Assistant will gradually be replaced by the Gemini Large Language Model (LLM), addressing the shortcomings and sluggishness of Google Assistant that have drawn criticism.
Google stated that it expects to expand Gemini for Home to more countries and regions by 2026, but whether Taiwan will be included is not yet confirmed. However, given that many Google products have been offered in the Taiwan market in recent years, it is expected that Gemini for Home will also include a Traditional Chinese interface for the Taiwanese market.
Core upgrades: More natural dialogue, deeper understanding of instructions
Compared to the existing Google Assistant service, Gemini for Home's advantage lies in its more powerful natural language understanding and conversational capabilities.
• The startup method remains unchanged: It is still woken up by "OK Google" or "Hey Google".
• Import "Gemini Live" mode: After saying "OK Google, let's chat", you can start a continuous conversation mode, and you don't need to repeat the wake word to ask follow-up questions.
• Deep understanding of intent: Google emphasizes that Gemini is better able to understand complex instructions and contextual relationships, for example:
► Explain the principles of electricity to a 7-year-old child.
► Explain the difference between the words (affect vs. effect) and provide memory tips.
► Provides factual information (top five scorers in basketball history).
► Check schedule (time of a team's next match).
► Provide lifestyle advice (how to increase shower water pressure).
► Precise media control (playing songs from the summer of 1998, showing videos about skyscraper construction).
► Cross-device operation (playing music through living room speakers).
► Includes Nest Cam footage (Were there any animals in the backyard last night? Subscription required).
► Set more complex timers/alarms (ring 10 minutes before sunrise).
► Find local information (What time do nearby coffee shops close?).
Google describes Gemini as enabling smart home assistants to evolve from simple "note takers" into "actively supportive partners" that can understand intent.
Advanced features still require a Google Home Premium subscription.
While the basic AI assistant upgrade (replacing Google Assistant) is free, more advanced features require a Google Home Premium subscription (starting at $10 per month).
Features requiring a subscription include:
• Gemini Live (Continuous Dialogue)
• Search camera history records (e.g., asking if there were any animals in the backyard last night).
• Automate processes via voice (expected launch in early 2026)
However, if a user has already subscribed to Google One's AI Pro or AI Ultra plan, the benefits of Google Home Premium will be included directly without any additional payment.
Smart home assistants enter the AI era, facing off against Amazon Alexa+
Google sees Gemini for Home as a way to revitalize its smart home image and shed the stereotype of Google Assistant being inadequate and slow. Meanwhile, its main competitor, Amazon, has already launched a new generation of AI assistants based on large natural language models.Alexa+Early testing has also begun in the United States.
However, Google also previewed its next-generation Google Home smart speaker. It is expected to be in the spring of 2026.It will be available soon, so the full hardware experience of Gemini for Home may still be some time away.
