In response to market doubts, technology companies have been promoting AI applications and services, which has led to a surge in traffic for many content websites and blogs.Significant reduction, produced by the Pew Research Center, a market research organizationresearch report, indicating that Google search joinsAI OverviewsAfter that, it brought a significant impact on the overall website traffic. However, Liz Reid, head of Google's search businessRespond via the official blog, stating that the traffic of search-oriented websites is "relatively stable" and that the clicks of users are of "higher quality", attempting to provide a different perspective on the outside world's concerns that AI functions may damage the content ecology.
Liz Reid stated in her blog that after the launch of the AI Overviews feature, users' searches became more frequent, and their queries became more complex and diverse, further driving an increase in overall clicks and search quality. She emphasized that after people get answers through the AI Overviews feature, they actually ask more questions, and therefore see more page links, giving the website more exposure and click opportunities.
However, the statement did not include any specific data or charts to support the claims, nor did it further explain the types of websites that benefited or were affected. Liz Reid only mentioned that some websites did experience a decline in traffic, but also that other types of content saw increases, such as forums, video content, podcasts, and posts with original voices or firsthand opinions, which actually received more attention.
Liz Reid further pointed out that when users ask simple questions like "When is the next full moon?", the AI Overviews feature can already provide instant answers, naturally reducing the need to click further on the web page. However, this is actually similar to features such as the Knowledge Graph that Google has provided in search in the past, or the card interface that can directly display aggregated content such as sports scores.
However, Liz Reid also emphasized that for more in-depth inquiries or those requiring consumer decisions, most people will still choose to click into the website to view in order to obtain more complete information, and the value of such clicks is also higher.
However, this statement is significantly inconsistent with data from a Pew Research Center report. The report indicates that when AI Overviews content appears in search results, users are only 8% likely to click on traditional search results, compared to 15% when AI Overviews content is not included. Furthermore, only about 1% of users actually click on the source link within the content, and most people end their browsing experience after viewing the content.
This observation is also consistent with Cloudflare CEO Matthew PrincePrevious statementThe consensus is that search engine traffic is shrinking rapidly. For example, ten years ago, Google generated one visit for every two pages of content it crawled. However, earlier this year, this ratio dropped to six pages per visit, and by June of this year, it had plummeted to 10 pages per visit, indicating a significant decrease in the actual traffic contribution of search engines to content websites.
While Google has publicly stated that its AI-powered search features improve user experience and click quality, it hasn't provided concrete data to support these positive impacts. Whether Google's claims will be widely accepted, given observations from industry and research institutions, requires more concrete, transparent data and long-term tracking to verify.
