Google previously confirmed that it would work with Samsung and Qualcomm to create,Codename: "Project Moohan"OfAndroid XRThe extended reality headset has been officially confirmed to be named Galaxy XR and will be sold first in the US and South Korean markets starting from now on. The suggested retail price is US$1800 (approximately NT$58000), which is just over half the starting price of Apple Vision Pro.
Specs: Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, 2900 million pixels, weighs only 545 grams
In terms of specifications, the Galaxy XR is the result of a three-way collaboration between Google, Samsung and Qualcomm. It is equipped with a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor and is equipped with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage capacity.
The display is one of the highlights of this event. It uses a Micro OLED panel with a total pixel count of 2900 million (surpassing the 2300 million of the Vision Pro), a resolution of 3552 x 3840, and a 96% DCI-P3 wide color gamut performance (higher than the 92% of the Vision Pro).
However, in terms of frame refresh rate, the Galaxy XR only supports a maximum of 90Hz, which is lower than the Vision Pro's 120Hz.
But the Galaxy XR has a clear advantage in body weight. The body weight including the forehead pad is only 545 grams, which is much lower than the latestVision Pro with M5 processorSamsung emphasizes that its ergonomic balance frame can distribute pressure to the forehead and back of the head, minimizing facial discomfort.
Dual penetrating lenses and iris recognition, battery life of about 2 hours
The Galaxy XR features dual high-resolution passthrough cameras for MR mixed reality experiences, six external tracking cameras, and two eye-tracking sensors. Like the Vision Pro, the Galaxy XR also supports 3D spatial photography and video capture.
In addition, the device also supports iris recognition, which can be used to unlock the headset or enter passwords in specific apps.
In terms of battery life, the Galaxy XR also uses an external battery (approximately 302 grams) to power the device, providing approximately 2 hours of general use or 2.5 hours of video playback. This data is similar to the 2.5-3 hours of battery life of the Vision Pro with M5 processor specifications.
Android XR Core: Fully Introducing Gemini AI and Google Apps
Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem at Google, stated that Android XR is the first Android platform built from the ground up for Gemini apps. This means the device will deeply integrate Google's generative AI technology, and all apps listed in the Google Play Store will run directly on the device. Google has also reworked several core apps for this purpose, including:
• Google Mmaps:Navigate with Gemini and immerse yourself in 3D Immersive View.
• Google Photos:2D photos and videos can be "automatically spatialized" through AI.
• Youtube:You can ask Gemini to find a video or ask for details about it.
• Circle to Search:In see-through mode, you can view any object in the real world and search for it using gestures like the circle search function.
• other:Common apps including Google TV, Chrome browser and Google Meet have simultaneously launched Android XR versions.
In addition, the Android XR system interface also supports multi-tasking, allowing multiple resizable App windows to be opened at the same time, and can be automatically arranged through voice commands through Gemini.
There is plenty of third-party audio and video and game content, and the controller and storage box are sold separately for $250 each.
For entertainment, the Galaxy XR supports 4K virtual theaters, 180/360 VR content, and expanded viewing options through streaming apps like Crunchyroll, HBO Max, and Peacock. Games include "NFL Pro Era" and "Inside [JOB]," and Gemini provides real-time game guidance.
The Galaxy XR primarily supports hand tracking and gesture control, but also offers a physical controller for more detailed operations. However, both the controller and travel case must be purchased separately, each priced at $250.
Samsung also announced that users who purchase the Galaxy XR before the end of this year will receive a free "Explorer Pack" bundle, which includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, YouTube Premium, and Google Play Pass subscriptions, as well as multiple app subscription services such as NBA League Pass (US) or Coupang Play Sports Pass (Korea).
