The EU is about to promoteDigital Markets ActEarlier, Estelle Werth, Google's EU Director of Government Affairs and Public PolicyPosted that, apps listed on the Google Play Store within the EU Special Economic Zone will be allowed to be traded through third-party payment methods.
After allowing third-party payment methods other than Google Pay, Google has pledged to adjust the platform service fee charged for in-app transactions. The 99% fee charged by 15% of apps will be reduced to 12%, while the 30% fee will be reduced to 27%. Developers will also be responsible for any processing fees and other costs associated with using third-party payment methods.
However, the new adjustment plan does not include game apps, but Google said it will allow game content to be traded through third-party payment methods before the Digital Market Act is actually implemented.
Compared with Google's approach, Apple recentlyAlready adjustedSouth Korea's App Store regulations allow users to pay for in-app purchases using alternative payment methods. Apple, however, maintains a caveat: when using third-party payment services, Apple will still collect a 26% commission on each transaction to cover platform maintenance, VAT, and other related costs. Furthermore, third-party payment services cannot be used for Family Sharing subscriptions or to request payment from others.
