Following Workspace users, Google announced a series of new AI features for general Gmail users, based on the Gemini model, ranging from automatically composing emails to intelligently organizing inboxes. However, it's important to note that while some features are free, more advanced "brains" require a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription.
Paid subscription features: AI Overviews and AI Inbox
For users willing to pay for a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription, Gmail becomes very different.
First, there's the "AI Overviews" feature, which makes Gmail's search bar as intelligent as a chatbot. Users no longer need to type in rigid keywords (such as "plumbing quote"), but can directly ask questions in natural language, such as, "Which plumber gave me a quote for my bathroom renovation last year?" Google will automatically analyze the email content and provide the answer.
Secondly, there's "AI Inbox," a feature designed to address "mail anxiety." Like a personal secretary, it automatically filters out unimportant spam and identifies VIP contacts based on your contact frequency and relationship, compiling truly important to-dos and emails into a "briefing" that lets you grasp the key points at a glance. Google emphasizes that all of this is done while prioritizing privacy.
In addition, there is a "Proofread" editing feature similar to Grammarly, which can provide suggestions on grammar, word accuracy, and tone to help users write more professional letters.
Free features: Letter writing assistance and intelligent replies
The good news is that Google has also made some useful features available to all Gmail users (no subscription required).
• Help Me Write:This feature is now available to everyone. Simply enter a few prompts and AI will generate a complete draft letter for you, which is quite convenient for users who don't know where to begin.
• Suggested Replies:Google calls it the next generation of "intelligent replies." It doesn't just provide canned replies; it can also mimic the user's tone and style to draft responses.
• Email string summary:While the Q&A feature in AI Overviews requires payment, the "Email String Summary" feature is free. Faced with lengthy email exchanges, AI can quickly summarize the key points of the discussion, allowing you to get up to speed quickly.
Release schedule
This Gemini AI update will be rolled out first to English-speaking users in the United States, starting today. Google says it will gradually add support for more languages and regions in the coming months.
