GlobalFoundries, which was spun off from AMD's manufacturing division in 2009 and is majority-owned by Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC), was earlier confirmed by CEO Tom Caulfield.Plans to go public in 2022.
Currently, GlobalFoundries is still a private company. Its major foundry partners include AMD, IBM, Arm, Broadcom, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments, etc. Its foundry facilities include the 12-inch fab Fab 1 in Dresden, Germany (formerly AMD's Fab 36 and Fab 38), Fab 8 and Fab 10 in Malta, New York, USA, and Fab 7 in Singapore. The 8-inch fabs Fab 2, Fab 3, and Fab 5 are located in Singapore, and Fab 9 is located in Vermont, USA.
GlobalFoundries initially only manufactured AMD products, but after receiving investment from Advanced Technology Investment Company, it began construction of Fab 8 in Malta, New York, USA. It subsequently acquired IBM's wafer production line and expanded its foundry facilities in Singapore, thereby expanding its foundry business beyond just producing AMD processors.
However, last year's announcement that it would indefinitely suspend development of its 7nm LP process technology and focus resources on its existing 12nm and 14nm FinFET process technologies, coupled with rumors that Advanced Technology Investment Company will terminate its investment, means that GlobalFoundries must seek additional development paths, and a public offering may be one of the means of seeking external financing.
