Germany may adopt stricter controls on direct technology investment from non-EU countries such as China

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck has revealed that Germany will tighten scrutiny of investments in key technologies such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence from non-EU countries, including China. Investments deemed to have an impact on the German economy or security will be banned. This move aims to prevent German economic development from being influenced by foreign companies while also stabilizing Germany's position as the largest economy in the EU.

US President Biden recently signed a new executive order to restrict US businesses from investing in sensitive technologies such as semiconductors, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence in China, to prevent Chinese businesses from using US funds and technology to create technologies that affect national security. He also emphasized that any investment, joint venture, or private equity and venture capital investment is prohibited.

Due to China's recent tough political stance abroad, coupled with the Ukraine-Russia war and its long-standing relations with Taiwan, many technology suppliers have been affected by geopolitical factors. As a result, many countries and regions have called for businesses to reduce their reliance on Chinese manufacturing. For example, Intel plans to expand production in the United States and increase investment in production lines in Europe.

The recent restrictions imposed by the United States and Germany on overseas investments from China and other countries have attracted considerable market attention. However, some industry insiders believe that this move may have a greater impact, especially if the government imposes excessive restrictions, which may have an adverse impact on overall economic development.
