At the Oculus Connect 2 event held earlier this month, Samsung confirmed it will release an updated Gear VR headset, compatible with the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 series. The device will be 22% lighter than the previous version and will feature updated features such as the side touchscreen. The headset is expected to launch in November during the US holiday shopping season, priced at $11, and will be available globally thereafter.
The Gear VR series currently incorporates a large amount of Oculus technology resources, so it is expected to have more stable performance in presenting virtual reality content. It also provides specifications such as a single-eye viewing angle of up to 96 degrees and a focus distance that can be controlled between 5.4 cm and 7 cm. It also has internal components including motion sensors, gyroscopes, and proximity sensors to help images correspond to the correct display position.
As for the body, the appearance is slightly different from the previously launched Gear VR version. It also provides a micro USB connection interface for connecting to mobile devices, and the body color is still only available in white.
Compared to the previous versions, which were all labeled "Innovator Edition", it means that they are still early adopters for developers. Therefore, the currently released Gear VR is the "official version" for the general consumer market.
